Virtual Disk

A virtual disk is a drive that appears as ordinary physical disk drive to the operating system. The difference between physical and virtual disk drives is that the contents of virtual disk is stored in a file called disk image. A special software is used to manage virtual disk images. Virtual disk can be used in a usual way as any other drive in the system.

Unlike physical drive, virtual disk can be detached (unmounted) at any moment. Virtual disk image can be copied to another computer. This convenient feature of virtual disk software allows fast transferring of large amount of files between computers.
