Hard Disk Encryption

Operating systems store files on storage devices like fixed hard disks or removable media. If some storage device is removed from a computer and attached to another computer, all files on that disk can be accessed and viewed by a third party. This imposes a security risk - if your storage media is stolen, anyone can easily read your data.

Hard disk encryption protects data on disk sector level. When hard disk is encrypted, all data saved to it is stored in encrypted form, including file system metadata, OS paging and hibernation files, and even unused space. If someone acquires such disk, he will see only random data. Without knowing the encryption key it is impossible to view the original (unencrypted) disk contents.
